ADHD Video: Dr. Kenny interviews Adult ADD Coach Bonnie Mincu

Friday, August 31st, 2007

On a recent family vacation to New York City, I had the privilege of meeting Bonnie Mincu, a respected Adult ADD/ADHD Coach. I met her for breakfast at a great little place in Greenwich Village. Although we have spoken on the phone and by email, this was the first time that we met in person. After our discussion - Bonnie graciously agreed to let me interview her on video camera.
I asked Bonnie about coaching for Adult ADD/ADHD, as well as her home study course for ’self coaching’.

Do You Have an ADD/ADHD Medication Disaster Story?

Sunday, August 26th, 2007

As a Psychiatrist who specialized in ADD/ADHD, I hear lots of information about ADD and ADHD Medication.
I regularly hear great things - i.e. how the medicine has transformed someone’s life…
And I hear about problem situations… When a medicine had a side effect, or maybe wasn’t even needed.

That is one of the reasons that I have my newsletter, and post to this blog - to teach you the right information that you need, hopefully when you need it.

Because I have received so many questions about medicines for ADD/ADHD (like Ritalin, Ritalin LA, Concerta, Metadate CD, Biphentin, Daytrana, Adderall, Adderall XR, Dexedrine, Vyvanse, etc.), I have decided to teach you more about medicines for ADD and ADHD. I will be posting on this blog, or on my newsletter (just enter your name and address on the top right to be sure not to miss this) how you can take advantage of this opportunity to learn more about ADD/ADHD medication in the coming weeks.

Recently, I was amazed by how people were willing to share their experiences with whether Vyvanse works on this blog. Since Vyvanse is not available in Canada (where I work), I asked for your input as to whether this medicine works well. I was amazed at the response! I want to thank each of you who took the time to share your feedback. Discussions have even started between readers of this blog. I am thrilled that this blog has helped to create a community for you.

Now that I am putting together the materials for a course on ADD/ADHD Medication - I wanted to ask you about your experiences with ADD and ADHD medication.

On this post - I want to ask you about any ADD or ADHD medication disaster stories.

Why do I want to know about the disasters?

Well, I hope that I can learn from the ‘disasters’ that may have happened, and hopefully so can my readers. Also, as I go to prepare the material for the ADHD medication home study course - I want to make sure to address all of the situations, not just the successful ones.

So, if you have an ADD or ADHD medication disaster story, please type it into the comment box below.
(just know that it will take a little bit of time until it shows up on the blog - as all comments are ‘moderated’, meaning approved - to prevent spam posts). I would really appreciate you sharing your experiences with me - and also the thousands of other people who read this blog from all over the world.

Thank you for your help.

The radio station: 610 AM in St. Catharines, Ontario.
If you live close to St. Catharines, or even as far east as Toronto, you will likely be able to tune in.

This show may be rebroadcast in many Canadian Cities (as has happened in the past), and if I find out the schedule in time, I will post it here for you.

To hear my last series of radio shows, visit this link: ADHD The Good News. There are 4 radio shows (each almost 30 minutes long) which cover many aspects of child and teen ADHD.

I hope to have you join me for this radio show - and it is a ‘call in’ show, so feel free to call in with a question!

Does Vyvanse Work?

Thursday, August 16th, 2007

Vyvanse is the newest medicine for ADD and ADHD. It uses an innovative approach so that it is an ADHD ADD medication that cannot be abused.
As a Canadian doctor, I am not able to prescribe Vyvanse, because it is not yet available outside of the US.
So, my biggest question is: Does Vyvanse work?
I have read the research, I have heard the presentations, but I don’t have real life experience with this medicine.
This is where you can help me out.
I want to hear from anyone who has tried Vyvanse, or even considered trying Vyvanse.
Just go ahead and enter a comment below.
Please realize that when you click submit, it will take a little bit of time until your comment reaches my blog. That is because every comment is moderated (i.e. I want to make sure that there are no spam comments, and nothing hateful, racist, etc.).

I found this video - where someone shares his or her experience with Vyvanse - and you can watch it here:

Now, it’s your turn. Please type in any of your own personal experiences with Vyvanse so that the readers of this blog can benefit from your knowledge and experience. I know that the readers of this blog span the whole globe - so if you have experience with Vyvanse, all of the readers of this blog (American, Canadian and International) will appreciate your contribution very much!

Thank you for your help,

Dr. Kenny

Do You Need New and Up To Date Content on Your ADD or ADHD Website or Blog?

Sunday, August 5th, 2007

If you have a websites or blog on ADD and ADHD, I am sure that there have been times when it has been harder to come up with new and informative content for your site.

You want new information, which will be great for your visitors, as well as the search engines. And you want both of the visitors and search engines to keep coming back to your site…

I can help you with this…

Generally, I don’t allow people to take articles off of my blog and republish them - unless they get specific permission (and this hasn’t happened yet).

However, using a new ‘web 2.0′ tool - called a ‘blidget’, you can now publish content from this blog to your site. A ‘blidget’ is a form of a widget (it comes from ‘Blog Widget’). You don’t really have to understand how this works to get the benefit from it (like you don’t have to understand how an engine works to drive a car…).

If you want to have the content from this blog on your site - and it will automatically update itself whenever I add a new post - then you just have three simple steps.

  1. Click on the black box on the right side of this blog - the one that says: ‘Get My Blog As a Widget’
  2. Visit the site - and you can do some customizing of how it will look - i.e. narrow or wide, you can change the color of the outline, etc. Then just click ‘Get Widget’.
  3. You can then take this little piece of ‘code’ and add it to your site, or give it to your webmaster to have him/her add this new and updating content to your site for you.

When you do this - every time I add a new post about ADD or ADHD, your site will be updated. It is a great way to get new information added to your site without having to do any work.

Please note - I only want to share this ’syndicated content’ with reputable sites which aim to inform and educate about ADD and ADHD. Please do not add this code to your site if you promote hate, racism, or adult material, etc.

ADHD Kids With Poor Sleep Benefit from Medicine

Saturday, August 4th, 2007

A research study was just published in the medical journal ‘Sleep‘ which reports on a study of children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and poor sleep efficiency. It documents that a measure of vigilance improves when these children use the medication methylphenidate.

The researchers split 37 children with ADHD into two groups - good sleepers and poor sleepers, based on testing. They then found that the poor sleepers had a significant improvment in their awareness and vigilance on the neuropsychological test called the CPT (continuous performance task) when they took methylphenidate.

Methylphenidate is the active medicine in the following ADHD medications:

  • Ritalin
  • Ritalin LA
  • Ritalin SR
  • Concerta
  • Metadate CD
  • Biphentin
  • Daytrana
  • Focalin
  • Methylin
  • Rubifen
  • and others…

Sleep problems can be very common in individuals with ADD or ADHD.
The American Academy of Sleep Medicine recommends the following:

Experts recommend that children in pre-school sleep between 11-13 hours a night, and school-aged children between 10-11 hours of sleep a night.

Your child should follow these steps to get a good night’s sleep:

* Follow a consistent bedtime routine.
* Establish a relaxing setting at bedtime.
* Get a full night’s sleep every night.
* Avoid foods or drinks that contain caffeine, as well as any medicine that has a stimulant, prior to bedtime.
* Do not go to bed hungry, but don’t eat a big meal before bedtime either.
* The bedroom should be quiet, dark and a little bit cool.
* Get up at the same time every morning.

Parents who suspect that their child might be suffering from a sleep disorder are encouraged to consult with their child’s pediatrician or a sleep specialist.
