Hi Karen,
Regarding ADHD and sleep - you can start with audio lesson #22 here: http://www.addadhdblog.com/27-add-adhd-audio-lessons/
And then a quick review of what I suggested:

Melatonin - start at 3 mg
Tryptan - a prescription of tryptophan - start at 500 and go up to around 2000 mg (with an Rx from your doctor)
Trazodone - a prescription of an old antidepressant that often helps with sleep - start at 25-50 mg for a kid, 50 mg for a teen
Clonidine - a prescription for sleep - start around 0.05 mg at night
Imovane - 5 mg to 7.5 mg to start. This is also an Rx.

These are the medications I suggest - starting from least side effects/strong to the stroger ones.
Of course, behavioural approaches and 'sleep hygiene' are very important.
Also, the use of Strattera - the ADHD medication may help with sleep.
I hope that helps.
Best,
Dr. Kenny

Dr. Handleman

I had the pleasure of meeting you at the Georgetown presentation. I hope that my little interview will get more people to your websites.

I did have a question that I asked you but I think I wrote down the wrong answer. My question was what can I give my 11 year old son who is on BiPhentin 30 mg and is working something that will help him to sleep at night when he needs it.

I wrote down you answer but I have bad writing and was in a hurry. I too think I suffer from ADHD so imagine that, I missed the written answer.

Thanks so much if you coul let me know what you said again.

Had pleasure of attending a Conference Lecture at the Bermuda College, as a 4th Generation Bermudian & also ADD, along with my ADHD daughter, now a Business Lawyer in Bermuda. The Bermuda Reading Clinic commenced under the guidance of Mrs. Geoffrey (Betty) Kitson, AD/ADHD's have much to be grateful for! Daughter commenced on Ritalin at age 8 & remained on same until early 2000's, now taking Adderall XR 30mg, & advises 'she no longer experiences the LOWS/DEPRESSION she did when the Ritalin ceased functioning, which is a REAL PLUS! When on R, she experienced appetite & sleep deprivation, am unaware of the side effects for her on the Adderall. Incidentally she was part of a 'Gifted Programme for ADHD pre-teens' under the auspicious of Toronto's Psychiatric Hospital & she was referred for that Special Gifted Programme by an Educational Psychologist she'd occasionally attended. I've also been placed on Add., I've found same is causing me uncomfortable 'Dry Mouth', hence I'm reducing from 30mg by having 5mg pills prescribed & am gradually winding down so I won't experience DM, regrettably also on 2 meds for bladder incontinence thus hence the DMouth. THANKS SO MUCH RE YOUR INTEREST IN THESE frustrating issues.
