This is not what you are addressing here, but it has taken me a long time to realize, esp. with my girl, that this was ADD. No interest in make-up or shopping like a normal early teenager--she is now much older. Also, with all my children, their is awful clutter, food remnants, etc. in their cars and apts. It is so bad that there is sometimes odor from rotten food. THIS IS SEVERE ADD. Of course, this is just another way that ADD contributes to poor self-esteem. I think girls seeing themselves as less attractive than they are is a normal, though very sad, part of our culture. My ADD children show a lack of interest in their appearance, even their hygiene. Alfie Kohn has reviewed the research which shows that good self esteem , does not have to lead to positive behavior , because the oreientation is towards the self - the 'I' . Talking about 'attractiveness in a relationship , bonding connecting sense, will give a new meaning to beauty.
