ADD/ADHD Daytrana Patch Recalled

By Dr. Kenny Handelman

Do you or your child take the Daytrana patch for ADD/ADHD? If you do you need to know that the company that manufactures this drug, Noven Pharmaceuticals, is recalling two lot numbers.

First, let me say that the problem is not due to product safety issues, but rather with the packaging itself. The foil packaging does not meet “release liner removal specification.”

In plain English it means that you may have problems opening the package. Check your prescription, if your box is labeled either lot number 2750211 or
2764111, you may want to call the company’s customer service line at 1.800.828.2088.

The company suggests you also call your local pharmacist.

The company says that the patch is perfectly safe to use unless you’re experiencing problems opening it, or you accidentally damage the patch while you’re opening it.

Peter Brandt, Noven’s, chief executive officer, said in a press release that the root cause of the problem has been identified and Noven is “committed to resolving the release liner issue.”

Representatives of the company say that if you aren’t experiencing problems opening the liners, then you should have no worries about the medication.

The clear patch is normally applied to the hip in the morning and worn for nine hours. Not only that, but the effects of the medication continue to be felt for another three hours after that.

I live in Puerto Rico ( a USA territory ). When it would be possible for the residents of PR ( Puerto Rico ) to buy DAYTRANA here ???????!!!!!!!!!! I can´t beleive that we live 2 hours by airplane from Florida and we can’t buy this product here. I have an 8 year old boy with this diagnostic and he is REALLY afraid of swallowing pills. In fact, he doesn’t swallow a pill at all.

Thank you very much.

Hi Shirley,
As a Canadian, we can’t get it either…
However, you can look for medicines which can be sprinkled - i.e.
Adderall XR, Metadate CD and there may be others (I think Focalin XR as well). Ask you doctor for these options.
Best,
Dr. Kenny

Thanks !!!!!!!!!!!! I appreciate very muuuch your answer and suggestion. After a brainstorming, between a cousin livin in Florida, a friend living in Missisippi and I, we got to that alternative. Since January 2008 I sprinkle focalin XR in a tablespoon with Calm Child Syrup. I mix the content and then he accepts to drink without much problem. He is SUPER intelligent. He is in 3rd grade, member of the National Honor, although what he learnd to read and write in the Private School is in english. Now he has been learning to read and write in Spanish, the principal language of Pueto Rico. We are very proud of him. As you said, THEY a re GIFTED. He weighs 92 pounds. IS IT OK TO GIVE HIM 30mg at the m orning ??? Until may his prscription was 20 mg. The response with 30 mg has been ok.
I want to share with you that is VERY IMPORTANT to work in team effort with the teachers. For my son and I that has been crucial.
GOD BLESS YOU and thank you for all the information you share with us.

Hi Shirley,
De nada! (yo hablo un poco de espanol!)
I don’t think that I can advise you about dosing for your son - best to talk to your doctor.
Best of luck,

Are patches recommended over pills because of the slower time release?
