I believe there are better ways to deal with ADD/ADHD. I have a friend who is a DJ here in Reno, NV. with me and he has ADHD. He has been able to manage most of his symptoms through a good diet, and taking all of his vitamins.

There are "better" ways to deal with ADD/ADHD than drugs, but drugs can be beneficial in treatment....especially in young teens. I have known a number of families that have struggled with children battling ADD/ADHD, and it can be a real serious situation sometimes. Occasionally, the symptoms aren't "extreme", but in some cases they can be quite stressful on the family. It's a shame.

It can be a huge challenge to have a child with add and very often the parents just believe they have naughty children. Its so sad in this day and age that such things still cant be spotted from a mile away and the parents given support and advice. It always astonishes me that these things are a relatively recent discovery.

Thank you for this great advice!

In my opinion one of the things that has the biggest effect is sticking to the routine as much as possible, it keeps the keep calm.
I think drugs should only play a very small part in treatment of ADD/ADHD as there are much healthier ways to obtain good results

Kids with ADHD act without thinking, are hyperactive, and have trouble focusing. They may understand what's expected of them but have trouble following through because they can't sit still, pay attention, or attend to details.

Amazed at all the talk about routines, being consistent, social concerns, etc...
You folks just absolutely don't get it. Its about diet. Cut the sugar, cut the processed food. Eat as close to nature as possible. If its made by man, don't eat it. There is NO ADD or ADHD. Get in your head. Change your diet!!!

For us, the most useful trick is the social story. If my kid hears a story explaining how the change is going to go, he flows pretty well. If we just jump it on him without prepping him? Meltdown city. Sometimes he even uses the social story as an opportunity to shape the experience. He adds something to the story, or reinterprets a part of it to make it easier for him to handle. As long as it still fits in our big picture, we call that a win.

I was diagnosed at 4 as "hyperactive" I was put on Ritalin until I was 14 and only then did the headmaster of my school take me off it. I think drugs should only play a very small part in treatment of ADD/ADHD as there are much healthier ways to obtain good results.
