ADHD in India

By Dr. Kenny Handelman

It is known that ADHD affects people in all countries, and of all cultures. However, the level of awareness, knowledge and treatment varies significantly between cultures. There is relatively little recognition of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) in India, and there are few reliable statistics about the rate of diagnosis there.

This week, the President of India, A. P. J. Abdul Kalam, participated in a book release about ADHD. The book, entitled: ADHD – Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder, is authored by Parvathy Viswanath. Viswanath is the founder and director of the AIKYA Special School.

I am thrilled to hear that an Indian expert is providing more information to people in India about ADHD. I am also very impressed that the President of India, Abdul Kalam, participated in the release of this book. This type of high profile event will help people in India to understand and accept ADHD.

Information from an Indian expert is crucial to ensure that the information is culturally accurate, and discusses local resources and approaches.

Hopefully, this is a great step forward for the recognition and management of ADHD in India. To read a full article on this story, click here.

I read your website as I was trawling through the net trying to look for ADHD info in India.Information about ADHD in India is abysmally low. Few studies on incidence in India indicate rates of 5-10%, translate that in our country to a couple of million children, adults and their families struggling with this condition.
Being a clinical psychologist I can vouch for the fact that even among psychiatrists and educators there are low levels of information about treatment and intervention strategies, this is a disorder that is not culturally recognised.
I am encouraged by the release of the book on ADHD, I wish we could look at a concerted effort nationally.I was recently informed that the Indian Association of Rehab Professionals in partnership with MediaLab Asia is planning on starting a web portal for disabilities in India, this will hopefully provide info that will be of use to parents and professionals.

Nice to see some information about ADHD in India. Though i handle lots of individuals with ADHD the awareness level in India is very low. We need to take some measures to spread awareness among indian parents and adults about this disorder. Awareness gives better choice which gives better results.

    Hello,
Could anyone recommend a qualified clinician to assess/evaluate and treat an individual for adult attention deficit disorder in the Mumbai area?Thank you

  5. We are running a integrated multispeciality Center for ADD/HD in Mumbai. We diagnose these patients using psychometric evaluation and behavioral assessment. Subsequently these individuals are treated using a combination of Homeopathy, Computerised Cognitive training and Computerised Neurofeedback. Results have been really promising.

Hi, Please help me understand my child.
I have two children, a daughter and a son. My daughter is perfectly alright in all aspects of her life where as my son is not. When he was 10 months old he started speaking and by one and half year he was able to speak most of the things, names etc which was a bit puzzling to us as my daughter started to speak fluently only around two and a half years. We were quite thrilled that my son was quite good at catching things. By the time he was two and a half years he was well versed with abcd…z reading all of LKG and UKG books of my daughter, reading all of the images..etc. He used to insist up on us sitting beside him to listen when he read these LKG AND UKG books. He even participated in television show for children when he was two and a half years old. But…….when he was admitted to school, he started to lose that enthusiasm to study, which is still continuing till date. Now that he is in 4th class he finds difficult to understand subtractions, additions, does not write properly, writing is not in neat…etc..etc. Otherwise, he is good at reasoning, always inquisitive and researching, never sits idle. Except for his interest to cartoons and games which he spends about half an hour each, he always try to spend his time cycling or doing some experimental works..meaning opening old electronic items, opening up toys and studying their operation..and similar things. Could any one please guide me what could be his problem and whether this can be attributed to ADD or ADHD. I even took to a Psychiatrist at Apollo in Hyderabad when he was in class I, but the doctor said, that he was quite okay, but distracted by things of his interest and will take time for him to come out of these and understand the importance of study and till then we need to be patient. But our anxiety rises as the days go by because of the fact that he is in class IV and yet does not understand addition and subtraction. I request anyone who can understand my sons problem and guide me to a doctor who can better understand his problem and help him. Please…my ph: 09246886455

    Hello ,
I am a psychotherapist based in USA.
My practice is largely with adults and hence my advice is mostly based on my extensive experience around emotional and mental disorders.
I would first start by having your son have a complete and thorough physical examination by a pediatrician including a neuro work up to rule out any medical reasons related to his presenting problems.
If the results are inconclusive I would suggest a referral to a neuro psychologist and a child psychiatrist ror a diagnostic work up which I believe would give you a lead towards a treatment plan for your son.
I hope someone reading these blogs would be able to refer you to an appropiate resource in Hyderabad.
You can in the meanwhile search the wikipedia site to learn more about mental disorders including diagnosis and treatment. The DSM-IVR book is a good resource as well.
I wish you and your son the best.

    Hello Ganesh,

I suggest that you visit SRU – Sri Ramachandra Mission’s hospital – deparement of mental health & meet Dr Raman – Asst Professor – dept of Psychiatry for an initial assessment. You could also see Dr KathirKaman – HOD – department of clinical Psycology who can suggest some initial assessments to provide you with a diagnosis. Please note that this a government hospital but you could always ask them for their address / location of their private practice if you would like to be seen in a better environment.

    Dear Friends
ADHD is a common condition and is seen in about 2-5% children. It was first described about 100 years ago and stimulant medications are used to treat ADHD in UK.
In ADHD there is a demonstrable difference in normal brain function that causes a clever child to underacheive academically and behave poorly, despite receiving high standard of parenting.
ADHD presents in two ways, impulsive ,poorly self monitored behaviour(referred as hyperactive-impulsive behaviour) and in problems of attention, short term memory and learning( attention deficit) A child may present with one of these in isolation but most children have mixture of both. With age the active and impulsive behaviour tends to mellow but learning and organisation problems tend to linger on.For a diagnosis of ADHD 6 of the 9 criterias of DSM 4 diagnosis of ADHD should be present.ADHD is a strongly hereditary condition.ADHD incidence is approximately same in most countries and races. In India more information needs to be given through the media and other platform about this condition.Treatment of ADHD involves behavioural advice, support at school and use of stimulant medications(methylphenidate).Certain nonstimulant medications like atomoxetine are also available to treat ADHD..ADHD can be associated with other co morbidities like oppositional defiant disorder, Autistic spectrum disorder, Dyslexia and Dyspraxia.

I have two kids the elder one is fifteen and in class 10th and hardly finds interest in studies very forgetful and the youger one is six years old, he is hyperactive, impulsive, talks alot cant focus and also gets irritated by sounds. recently i took him to the clinical psychologist after tests he is been identified as the mild to moserate autism and ADHD.he has been suggested for CFGF diet and the proper rythem{fixed time table}which is helping him alot.A strictly no drug for him A drug can make my child lithargic and sleepy.I want my child to be playful and chirpy so i give him all the attention he requires most of the time it becomes difficult to handle him,he sometimes he hits me in public places for his demand to be fulfilwhich is very hurting btI m bearing al his tantrums to take him in confidence because of which my elder kid has started expecting more tolerance from me. I love him too and give him foot massage once in awhile as i give everyday to my younger one.So my advice to everyone there who has loved ones suffering with ADHD to try CFGF diet, swing play, bedtime foot massage, hand knitting, exercises and to have patience in dealing with them and rest is destiny abt which we can’t do much

Sir/Madam I just want to know if there are any chances for my child to be normal or can ADHD be cure?

    • Dipesh,
I respect your concern for your son.
It sounds like working with that doctor is a great approach – i.e. trying a medication and working on therapy.
You can read more on this blog and even subscribe to my newsletter at http://www.theadhddoctor.com to learn more about ADHD to help you to understand the answers to your questions.
One other thing to consider – if he isn’t speaking – it may be worth you reading about Autism. I do not know if your son has this – but if you read about it, you can certainly ask your doctor if this applies.
      All the best,
      Dr. Kenny

  22. Dipesh Matalia says:

    Dear Dr.Kenny
Thank you for responding.I will definatly ask about Autism to Dr. Poonam Walia.I am subscribing to your newsletter too.

My advice would be to go for Homeopathy+Ayurveda G-therapy medication from Dr. Oswal in Pune. Their success rate is more than 50%.

  33. mg says:

In the USA they put the kids on Ritalin kind of stimulant for the management of the symptoms. The kids have to take this medication all their life. If they stop, the symptoms come back. There is no cure available in the traditional allopathic medicinal system.

There are alternative therapies which help certain kind of kids (mild to medium ADHD) like

    1) EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) practiced by Dr. Weathers (treats selective types of patients suitable for this CAER method with success rate of more than 70%). This requires that you visit Spokane, Washington and spend $$$$(thousands) for the 3 day treatment. http://www.caer.com/index.htm#AD

    2) Brain Balance: http://www.brainbalancecenters.com/

    3) Dr. Oswals G-therapy, Pune, India

    4) Stem Cell therapy by Dr Geeta Shroff in Delhi for very advanced ADHD and Autistic Spectrum Disorders and other brain related illnesses.

One thing I have notice which helps is doing math practices, even simple addition and subtraction. The more complicated math I try to resolve, the batter I(ADHD) get. Please let me know if it works for you.

My grandson aged 10 years is diagnosed for ADHD.His case history is given here.Kindly advise.

    David’s Case history
    Born on 28th jan 2000.
    Age as on 24th March 2010 : 10 yerars.
    • Baby was healthy. At the age of 5th month, mother and the child went to USA on a H! Visa, taking consent from David’s father .David came back to India with grandparents at the age of 8th month and was with them till he attained the age of one year ten months.
    • Differences arose between David’s parents and the two were physically separate from November 1999 till December 2002 when the parents from both sides reconciled and sent them to live together. This spell lasted hardly for three months and they again separated in March 2003. Till July 2006 they were separately living. They had severe irreconcilable differences and got permanently separated by a divorce decree in June 2008.
    • This disturbance in family might have had an impact on the child’s mental development. Chronology of his physical and mental development is given hereunder for complete understanding and analysis.
    • While David was with grandparents in India, Vaccinations were being administered as per Pediatrician’s advice .But MMR was given at the age of 9 months instead of at the age of 15 months.
    • Sat at the age of 8th month. Started walking at the age of 11months. Uttered the first word Ammamma at the age of 11 months or 1 year.
    • Subsequently speech was delayed up to 4 and half years. However it was observed that he was uttering small words and broken small sentences at the age of 3 to 3 and half years. It was also observed that he was setting himself aloof from family members and children and developing some kind of isolation. Immediately informed his father to take care but to no avail.
    • He was sent to preschool at that age.
    • At the age of 3 years, he was riding a baby cycle and also was playing very well with toys and balls.
    • Spoon feeding of food by mother was being done till 4 to 4&1/2 years of age.
    • Unable to attend nature call needs on his own till he attained the age of 8to 9 years.
    • Was in the habit of thumb sucking.
    • Was in the habit of night wetting the bed till he attained the age of 9 years.
    • Mimics the actions of his grandfather and speech slang of grandmother.
    • Got speech at the age 5 years. Slowly picked up from then onwards. Learnt alphabets, numbers from 1 to 100 at the age of 5 years.
    • Was reciting nursery rhymes nicely with actions at the age of 5 and ½ to 6 years.
    • Was riding baby cycle on road at the age of 6 years. He also liked going to children parks and playing there but with little or no mingling with children there.
    • At School he was assessed to be behind normal children and therefore the teachers and the mother preferred to keep with children of special educational needs.
    • Was doing sums up to addition and subtraction at the age of 7 years and was even reciting fluently math multiplication tables up to 2,3 4 and 5.
    • However the following symptoms were observed from the age of 3 years.
    1. Repetition of words when prompted by elders in an attempt to make him learn.
    2. Repeating at home the actions of the teacher in school.
    3. Rubbing though smoothly on the faces of others without concern for their inconvenience.
    4. Scratching though smoothly the feet of grandmother and grandfather and deriving pleasure out of it.
    5. Removing the spectacles of others.
    6. Rubbing though smoothly with hand on the hair of grandmother and mom also.
    7. Pulling out hair band of grandmother and other acquainted ladies.
    8. Tooth picking; always does this with the same tooth.
    • Between 7 and 8 years of age he developed aggressiveness and was exhibiting the following behavior.
    1. Insisting on the same thing he wanted until done.
    2. Beating violently if denied.
    3. Throwing off whatever he finds nearby if denied what he wants.
    4. Throwing tantrums like “shut up”,”out”,”get out of my house”,”stupid” etc.
    5. Opening the rest room door at home when someone is inside to derive pleasure out of it.
Irrespective of this behavioral problem, his IQ at other things like:
    • Computer operation, Operating TV with remote control,Cycling,Battery powered baby scooter driving Etc is observed to be very normal. Added to this,
    • He is good at keeping track of the routes in USA city in the vicinity of our house and of his uncle’s;He is also good at following the rules when crossing roads by walk; That is, he presses switch provided to get pedestrian signal on, waits for the signal and crosses.
    • In School, the teachers say that he is calm in nature and does not resort to any activity which is impulsive in nature as mentioned above; He responds to his teacher’s instructions on good behavior and temperament control; In Daycare center too, the feedback is same above.
    • To correct the aggressive behavior mentioned above, mother had consulted a Psychiatrist in USA. She diagnosed the disorder as “ADHD” and put him on: STRATERRA 25 MG @1 TABLET A DAY AT BED TIME from September 2008.Continued this medicine up to February 2010.;His school performance deteriorated. His math ability decreased. His interest to go to school reduced.
    • He watches T V programs and plays video games without stopping for hours together.
    • The aggressive behaviors mentioned above continued.
    • The Psychiatrist now changed the medication to:
    1. CONCERTA 18 mg @ 1 tablet a day after breakfast.
    2. RISPERIDONE 0.5 mg @ 1 tablet a day at 4 P.M.
    • These are being used from 13th of March 2010.As of now (24th March 2010) no significant improvement but for calming during the day and feeling dizzy and sleeping in the night after taking in RESPERIDONE TABLET.
    • Losing appetite on taking CONCERTA.

Stopped these medications from 27th March 2010.It is observed that the aggressive behavior like beating violently has reduced to a sizable extent. On mother’s persistent attention on him he seems to improve his behavior. Going to school with less reluctance.

We would like to bring him to India and try alternative medicine /Therapy.

I seek advice from experts/those familiar with this problem on whether we can try putting him in a boarding school in India while simultaneously trying the alternative medicine/Therapy OR Is it preferable to keep him in USA ?.

I shall be highly thankful for your kind advice.

    • Thank you for sharing your story.
I am sorry, but I am unable to provide medical opinions on this website. Sometimes I answer small questions – for people to take back to their doctors. This is a much bigger issue and I encourage you to consult a doctor about these issues.

I have read a lot about ADHD and the symptoms and feel that almost 90 % of the symptoms are co-related to my behavior accept for a big fact that in me all the symptoms are on the positive side, it may sound very funny but i have done a lot of achievements in all sorts of fields in life, be it education, learning, business, management and others. So for me i feel that ADHD people if change their behavior in certain way during their childhood or teenage, tend to become genius and very successful in life. Now the problem – as its hereditary, my son who is 3.5 years now is also having exact same positive symptoms of ADHD, he is an excellent learner, learnt shapes and colors even before the age and had a very comfortable time in the pre-school with excellent results in all fields accept drawing, he can solve puzzles easily, can match the pairs easily and does well in extra curricular activities like stage performance, swimming, playing carrom board etc. but the behavior is very strange sometimes, he is very talkative and can speak and argue on issues at length, he doesn’t want to listen to us. He wants to do whatever he likes, does not pay attention to important things said. But has a very sharp memory. Now I am a bit confused, whether to call it ADHD or some other kind of psychological problem. I have consulted with our child specialist who had been looking after his medical treatment since he was born, but he says that my son is normal.

If any good psychologist can be of help in New Delhi. Please suggest me. As i got aware of this ADHD problem from one of my overseas client who visited me and watched my son and me, he told me that I am having this problem and my son is also having ADHD.

I agree with my client on this basic fact – Untreated adults with ADHD often have chaotic lifestyles, may appear to be disorganized and may rely on non-prescribed drugs and alcohol to get by. I have had a very chaotic and almost 16 hour working schedule since last 2 years and had been through alcohol dependence. Recently came across the alternative anti-depressants and relaxants – Methylone and Mephedrone which are Amphetamines and good for treating the alcohol dependence and depression treatment as they help you feel very active, and good. As a result, i have had a positive change in me and got rid of my alcohol dependence but the other issues of ADHD remain at large.

    Kindly Advise.

  50. Sumi you could visit our website http://www.vrudhihmc.com and take free screening for your child for ADHD, if it is positive you could take a print out of it and see a local psychiatrist and he would be able to help you.
