Adult ADHD Resources in Toronto
ByI recently spoke at a conference in Toronto for professionals who deal with ADD/ADHD, and who wanted to learn more about working with Adults with ADHD.
One of the participants suggested that it would be helpful to have a spot for people to share their contact info and what they do.
I would be very happy to help to facilitate that with this blog post.
My invitation – if you provide an ADD/ADHD resource in the Great Toronto Area, please enter a comment below – with your contact information. I recommend a website or phone number. (If you post your email address, there’s a chance that someone could come to this site and ‘harvest it’, meaning start to spam you! NB You do have to enter your email to post a comment, but that doesn’t show up on the site)
So – if you provide ADD/ADHD resources in the Greater Toronto Area, particularly with adults, please leave a comment below describing (briefly):
- Who you are
- What you do to help with ADD/ADHD (hopefully adults)
- How people can learn more about you – i.e. website link, phone number
- How people can contact you
Please note that all comments are moderated – so they will not appear on the blog right away, and any comments deemed to be ‘spam’ will be deleted, and comments may be mildly edited if it’s deemed necessary.
I hope this helps!
Best,
Dr. Kenny

I have been looking for a Doctor that specializes in Adult ADD in the Barrie area for quite some time. If you have any information or contact in this are I would really appreciate the information.
Thanks
I have been trying to find a doctor or therapist for adult ADHD (with dysthymia) in Brampton for a long time now. After leaving the Peel Child and Adolescent Clinic I struggled tremendously throughout college but got assistance through the disability center at my school. Now that I am working and not receiving any professional help my life has disintegrated and simple day-to-day tasks completely overwhelm me. I feel unable to take care of myself. If there are any resources at all for adults in peel region please let me know. I would be willing to work with an ADHD coach or commute to Toronto as well. I have no health insurance so affordable options are appreciated but I’d go into debt for help at this point too. It shouldn’t be so difficult to find treatment as an adult. I feel like that poor Trix cereal mascot–Sily rabbit, ADHD is for kids!
Sadly, there is a drastic shortage of doctors specializing in ADHD in the Toronto area. In fact, from the information I received from doctors, hospitals and other medical practitioners, there is really only one who currently is not taking any new patients. I was able to connect with him only because of a very well connected family doctor. While his help has been reasonably successful, his time restraints has limited the effectiveness of the treatment. Its sort of like, here’s your pills. Don’t call me, I’ll call you.
Allow me to introduce myself. I am an ADHD coach trained through the Adlerian School of Professional Coaching in Toronto as well as JST Coach training specific to ADHD. I have been associated with Edge Foundation, an organization that provides ADHD coaching to young people in colleges and university. An investigative research study has just been completed through Edge Foundation studying the effectiveness of coaching with students diagnosed with ADHD in several US Universities and Colleges. The results will be published in September. I am also a special education teacher with decades of specialized teaching in this field. I find working specifically in this area to be a tremendous challenge as well as very rewarding as I support young people in the life skills necessary to launch successfully into their adult lives. Please do not hesitate to contact me either through e-mail or telephone. More information is available through my web site at http://www.studentsfirstcoaching.com. Edge Foundation is http://www.edgefoundation.org
I forward to hearing from you in the near future.
Sincerely, Ann Imrie Howlett
Two contacts:
1. Barrie: Dr. Timothy Bilkey (in a mall about 5 minutes’ drive from the Bay).
2. Toronto: Dr. John Rossiter Thornton (Yonge and Summerhill – s. of St Clair).
Bilkey will diagnose adults (takes three appointments to diagnose – expensive test but necessary). Thornton will medicate and do therapy (also is up for SPECT, if you wish it); OHIP covers him.
hey! just wondering if you could provide more feedback on dr.john thornton? for instance, does he medicate first session, what kind of therapy, etc. thank you.
Hi Jaye,
I’ve attempted to look up Dr. John Rossiter Thornton; however I’m having some difficulty finding contact information for a clinic or office. I’ve also tried looking him up on the website for the College of Doctor’s and Physicians of Ontario and can’t seem to find amy matches. Do you know (or does anyone know) if he still practices in Toronto? I live very close to Yonge and Summerhill, so it’d be wonderful if he indeed does practice from there.
Thanks!
I am wondering if he moved to the States, since I found his wife’s name connected with an organization in New York. But here is a link to something he is doing in Toronto on Nov. 24. The organization is interested in spirituality and mental health. If you just google John Thornton MD Toronto (without the Rossiter) you can find places where he has spoken, plus a picture. Also a link to his “prayer wheel,” endorsed by a few known people including Daniel Amen. He is a bit of a different drum. I remember needing to get in to see him through my GP in Toronto, so you might try that route. At least her or she could tell you officially where the guy is. Sorry if this has been a red herring; I am not living in Toronto anymore so may have lost touch. I have a friend who went to him, though, and will see if I can get more information. Here is the link: http://www.spiritualityinhealthcare.net/index.php?id=78
.. Correction: the website, which does in fact lead to an event in Toronto on Nov. 24 at Davenport and Yonge, does not say that Dr. Thornton is speaking – just lists him on the Executive of the group. But there appear to be contact-links on the page, and you could try via them to reach Dr T.
His office is (or used to be, if he has moved) on the corner of Yonge and Walker – one half-block north of Summerhill – on the northwest corner. You could simply pop up there and see if his name is still on the plate by the elevator. Buit he doesn’t have a receptionist and it might be rather an unorthdox way to proceed. Good luck.
On the other hand, Bilkey in Barrie might have a reference or two. Very nice receptionist – friendly.
416-926-8944 is his current business phone number (he’s got one of those strange-sounding digital answering machines, but don’t let that throw you off – in real life he has a wonderfully compassionate voice with just a hint of Irish!
Office several years back used to be @ Suite 205, 1246 Yonge St., (just north of Summerhill) … May still be there!
I knew him just as “Dr. Thornton”, and yes, you can only find him on the CPSO DoctorSearch as “John Thornton”. (Maybe he uses the full name for writing books/articles & more formal/impersonal situations.) Since there are way too many other ‘John Thornton’s on the internet – even some doctors! – John “Rossiter-Thornton” is the way to ‘google’ him, esp. if you’re interested in his other ventures. (Putting quotation marks around the hyphenated surname, prevents you from also getting all the Rossiter’s and Thornton’s in your search results!)
Intelligent, knowledgeable & well-connected, especially re: leading-edge developments in the field (e.g. Dr. Daniel Amen, & can refer you to Sunnybrook for a SPECT scan if appropriate).
Last but not least, he practises psychiatry the way it USED to be: actually TALKS to patients for a full session, as opposed to just writing you a prescription and showing you the door after 10 minutes!!

I must express my appreciation to this writer just for rescuing me from this predicament. As a result of browsing through the the web and finding principles which were not productive, I thought my life was gone. Being alive without the approaches to the difficulties you’ve sorted out by means of your good post is a critical case, as well as the ones that would have adversely affected my entire career if I had not encountered your blog. Your talents and kindness in maneuvering every part was very helpful. I’m not sure what I would’ve done if I had not come across such a solution like this. I can also at this moment relish my future. Thanks a lot so much for the professional and effective help. I will not hesitate to endorse your blog post to anyone who desires care about this issue.
Thank you for your kind words, Jaime! I’m glad this blog has helped you.
My husband has recently been diagnosed but our family doctor has not been able to find a psychiatric referral who specializes in adult ADD/ADHD as the Burlington specialist is not taking new patients at this time (too busy). My husband is willing to go anywhere in the Halton or Hamilton area. Any recommendations?
I’m a coach for adults with ADD/ADHD, as well as spouses/partners, family, friends, and coworkers. I completed a coach training program with Kate Kelly and Peggy Ramundo who are pioneers in adult ADD and coaching – they wrote the first book on adult ADD.
