Medications for adhd and ADD, work alright. They work TOO well. As a 16 year old girl from Pennslyvania, I know that. I've had symptoms ranging from hallucinations, to weight loss, to social anxiety. (EXTREME shyness). It wasn't my body that caused these symptoms; it was pills. Adderall for the hallucinations, ridelen for everything else. (Big words; can't spell right). It is my opinion that the American medical community, including phychiatrists, have no idea what they're doing. I should know; I've been to numerous doctors and taken meds since 3rd grade. ADD meds should only be used as a last resort. I only say this because parents tend to do what doctors tell them, without considering the opinions of their own children. I want mothers and fathers of children with adhd to know there are risks they put their children through when giving them meds. If your kids are hyper, don't contain them more than they are ALREADY contained. Make them try out for sports, get them out of the house more often, take them to a playground, be actively involved in their social lives, MAKE SURE THEY HAVE FRIENDS!! (When I'm off the pills, I have less controll of myself, people don't like me like that... But on them, I'm TOO controlled, and too scared to speak at all...) PLEASE think hard before giving pills to your kids... I want you to know what happened to me, so it does not happen to YOUR children. Please don't delete my comment. I only want to help. :(

Monique - ADHD medications can be very helpful when one is diagnosed properly and the medications are monitored appropriately.

I was reading an article in which the effects of Child-Centered Play Therapy (CCPT) were tested on elementary school students. The results of this study indicated that CCPT was an effective intervention for elementary school students. Of the 4 students in the study, 2 showed marked improvement in their hyperactivity and inattentiveness and 2 showed questionable improvement in theses same areas after 6 weeks of CCPT 2 times per week for 30-minute sessions.

This study was titled "ADHD Symptom Reduction in Elementary Students: A Single-Case Effectiveness Design" and was published in "Professional School Counseling", Oct2009, Vol. 13 Issue 1, p11-22.

As the parent of a child with many ADHD tendencies, this leads me to think that it is worth checking out lesser-known forms of therapy for dealing with ADHD before going to a medication-based regimen, especially when the suggested drug has not been on the market long enough to know the long-term side effects to the brain.

Here are a couple of links to other sites talking about play therapy and ADHD:

dont take these drugs unless you are diagnosed with ADD or ADHD the side effects of these meds can do more harm to someone who doesnt have ADD/ADHD. talk to your dr about this and see if they can have you tested because they wont recommend these meds unless you have these conditions.

Hello Dr. Kenny:

I'm an adult ADD patient, currently taking Concerta 36 and have had nothing but excellent results.

I work in a 'creative' field and pay for my meds across the counter, and my productivity has increased ten-fold since I've been able to drill down on my projects.

That said, I'm in above-average condition and compete in several sports, including soccer and rugby, and monitor my cardio-vascular numbers very carefully.

I've launched a blog about my adventures at hurricanebrain.org. Come on over and have a look around.
