Great Australian ADHD Brain Research

Medication Mastery 7 Day Sale

A new study was reported on in the Syndney Morning Herald, discussing how Melbourne researchers have done brain scans to show how differently children with ADD or ADHD’s brains process information. The story is here.

The article reports:

Researchers at Flinders University in Adelaide tracked the brain activity of 150 children and teenagers with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) to build a neuro-cognitive profile of their behaviour.

The researchers found that children with ADD or ADHD without their medication - struggled with memory and avoiding distractions. With their medication, they improved.

On this blog, I have wondered what is going on in Australia with ADD/ADHD. There seems to be a significant bias against this disorder. One of my blog readers posted a very insightful comment on my previous blog post, helping me to understand why new reports seem so biases against ADD/ADHD in Australia.

That is why I am happy to see that a good brain study was done, demonstrating that children in Australia with ADD or ADHD have brain differences, which improve with their medication. This is an important study to help to clear up misconceptions about ADD/ ADHD.

Well done!

    Hi,
I don’t know if this thread is the right place for this response but here is another newspaper report on Ritalin and stunted growth . For problems of obesity maybe it is good news

    Hi there
I am a 56 woman with ADHD and doing my Masters of education at the University of Victoria (BC Canada) on the
“Gaps in research, information and support for mature women with ADHD: sourcing through co-morbid implications”

My journey lead from my 28 year old son’s diagnosis at the high school where in he quit in frustration but this was brought up to me at
the time (I was visiting the north of Canada where he went to live with
his father a few years before…in an effort to get him away from the gangs of youth in the city of Victoria where he, his sister and I lived. I was divorced years ago. He did well in the North …that is working and staying out of trouble but his high school years were not good..he could not concentrate. Since then we have figured out his father as well as me were/are both ADHD and my father.. a world war vet and very much a scholar as well as a “OPPOSITIONAL BEHAVIOR” type was post hum. diagnosed with ADHD…. he got the strap every day in grades 6 and 7….he said that distinguished him royally at the private boys school he attended! He was grateful for the outbreak of WWII so he could join up before graduation! Anyway…my journey has been one of putting many of the pieces the puzzle together for me, my family and the past which was less than steller due to undiagnosed ADHD and far too much….old world corporal punishment and judgement. We are today on a journey of discovery and making our way through new material and old prejudices concerning ADHD and adults, learning and mental health. Quite a road and lots of pot holes …even with our universities and health care system in Canada! Thank you for keeping the pathways open for people to discover, share and learn.
    Sincerely, Brigit
PS my daughter now 26 also is ADHD and she is now getting treatment, after many years of smoking pot (without my knowledge) and after having 7 car accidents by the age of 23! My exhusband finally stopped paying for them…she is using a bike now and is fitness trainer and Thai kick boxer! Lots of Omega 3 my dear!
