Marianne,
It is medically OK to stop the medicine on the weekend. It will be up to the doctor to review if the child needs the benefits of the medication on the weekend as well - as many people do benefit emotionally, socially etc. on weekends.

Is it alright NOT to give a child of 8 Vyvanese on the weekend after he's been taking it for 5 days when going to school? I would guess his Mother doesn't give it to him while he is on vacation from school either. I think this could be dangerous, starting & stopping it. Help me to understand this please. His doctor said, according to her its ok to do this.

Your GP now has to refer you to someone who can assess and treat adult ADHD. It is in the NICE guidelines. Tell them to check this if they don't believe you:

Trevor,
Thanks for writing. Unfortunately, it is very common to have this type of experience.
I suggest you speak to your primary care doctor, and see who you can be referred to. If your doctor has no one to help with adult ADHD, find the nearest medical school and ask for the department of psychiatry. Contact them and ask who is doing work with adult ADHD. This may get you someone.
Also, you can use CHADD's professional directory:
http://www.chadd.org/Content/CHADD/Support/ProfessionalDirectory/default.htm
Please feel free to join www.adhdworld.com There are a number of adults with ADHD who share what they're going through.
Also, check out www.add.org. This is an organization for adult adhd/add. They can be very helpful.
I hope this helps!
Best,
Dr. Kenny
