Teens Need 9 Hours of Sleep
ByTeens are notorious for staying up late and sleeping in late – if given the opportunity. This situation is even worse when we add in MSN chatting, video games, TVs and DVDs, etc.
About 40% of kids and teens with ADD/ADHD have sleep difficulties as well, so this can make it even harder for teens with ADHD to get a good night’s sleep.
I have just read a great article on Newsweek about teens and sleep. It is definitely worth a read.
Here are some highlights:
- Teens need 9 hours of sleep per night.
- When teens get less sleep, they are more prone to irritability, headaches, etc.
- When high schools have started later in the morning, there was better attendance, and fewer car accidents.
This article finished up with a number of excellent tips to help your teenager sleep better.
Enjoy!

We have a great deal of difficulty getting out 14 year old daughter to get enough sleep. We see terrible mood-swings in her when she doesn’t sleep enough, but the’s very resistant to going to bed at at a time that will allow her sufficient sleep.
Fergus, it could be that you are pushing a bedtime that your teen thinks is for younger children. Most children are mature and want to be recognized for who they are. They may have their habits planned out. I suggest you work with your daughter to establish healthy habits.

I am a 15 year old with ADD. My mother thinks that I have to go to bed as early as 9:30, even on the weekends. I find this unfair, because it sais on this website that ,although I need 9 hours of sleep, if I go to bed on the weekends at 11:00, I should be able to sleep in until 7 o’clock. My mother never gives me the chance to get into the routine of this, and so every time she does let me stay up that late, I wake up groggy and disgruntled. I know that if you sleep out of routine, you will feel groggy, but once you get into the groove, you sleep normal. How can I convince my mom into this deal?
