Vyvanse for Adult ADD or ADHD

Vyvanse is the newest medicine to come to the US for the treatment of ADHD and ADD. I have asked you (the readers of this blog) about your experiences with it, and there has been a lot of discussion (see the comments section on ‘Does Vyvanse Work?‘).

There have also been a lot of questions. One question which has come up again and again is: ‘Can Vyvanse be used for Adult ADD?’

Read on for the answer…

At the time this article is written, Vyvanse has been approved by the FDA for use in ADHD in children aged 6-12 years old. Shire (the company that manufactures and sells Vyvanse) has applied for approval for Vyvanse to be used to treat adults with ADHD.

Even though the FDA has not yet approved Vyvanse for the treatment of Adult ADD/ADHD, doctors can still prescribe it, if they think that it is the right medicine for you.

How can that be?

There is something called ‘off label usage’. What that means is that even though Vyvanse is not officially approved for anyone with ADD or ADHD over 12 years old, doctors can still prescribe it if they feel that it is the right treatment. Technically, a doctor could prescribe it for any situation in which he/she thought that it would be the best treatment, however the doctor would have to be sure that it was medically relevant, and wouldn’t be malpractice. Examples: Vyvanse for ADHD at the ages of 13, or 23, or 33 is logical and will most likely help, however Vyvanse for a face rash is illogical and would likely be malpractice.

I suspect that Vyvanse will be used extensively in teens and adults with ADD or ADHD, because one of its main advantages is that it cannot be abused, and these are the ages when this can be a concern. Soon, the FDA will most likely approve Vyvanse for teen and adult ADHD, and then it will be official. (How long will that take? One can never know until it is approved. I would expect anywhere from 1 year to 2 years maximum. Hopefully less…).

In the mean time, if you are an adult with ADD or ADHD, and think that vyvanse may be the best medicine for you, go ahead and talk to your doctor about it. He or she may agree.

Vyvanse was prescribed to me after I got a Brain Scan at the Amen Clinic in California. I had been taking Adderall XR for three Years. I have found Vyvanse to be less than thrilling. I still get sleepy after 6 hours of it,like i did with Adderall 30 mg XR. I had no trouble filling it at Walgreens.I may need to bump up the dose to 70 mg instead. We recently took my 11 yr old off AdderallXR, and switched him to Daytrana Patch. WOW what a difference! he is nicer more complient and happy. The biggest down fall for the patch is the hour long wait for it to kick in. That is really bad in the morning.

I am an adult with ADHD diagnosed about 3 yrs ago. I have been on several medications with various results. Several have worked great (Adderall XR) but for a short period of time. I have been on Vyvanse for 1-2 months. It seems to work for most of the day with minimal side effects. I do have jaw clenching and somewhat of a suppressed appetite.
I have a question. I was tested for cholesterol levels this week and the results stated that my bad cholesterol was ok (105) my good cholesterol slightly low (35) and my triglycerides very high (320). This has not been a problem in the past and I am wondering if it could in any way be related to the Vyvanse.
    Thank you

  3. Dr. Kenny Handelman Says:

    Becky,
I am not aware of vyvanse causing any cholesterol problems. I will double check though - and come back to this post when I know more.

i am a 22 year old with inactive add i have been on vyvance for about 2 months. vyvance is kinda my life support. without it i cant get out of bed ,in a bad mood ,dont want to talk to anyone, bacicley just want to sleep allthe time. i started on the 30mg for a week and notest it would crap out on me half way though the day i told my doc and he said take anotherone 6 hours later. this worked for a bit but i sumtimes have 12 hour work shifts and it still wasent cutting it.told dock he gave me 70mg but onley last 6 hours. if i take more than the 70mg would that be abusing the drug? also when im on vyvance im in a really good mood andhelp around the house and talk to people and just really happy. some one asked me if i was high the other day at work because of my good mood and talkivness. is this norm? or am i high? this worrys me.

  5. RRR Says:

DEE, @ 22, which is by the way a great age, yur metabolism is still burning full speed. Take yr meds later in the a.m., it will always last 6-8 hrs, 12 hr meds are a drug co. line of BS.

  6. Nancy Says:

My 7 year old son has taken Ritilin and Adderall, and was recently switched to Vyvanse at 30mg. While I see more of his real personality coming through which is great, we still are having problems in the afternoons. I am meeting with his doctor next week; originally we were going to talk about changing his meds again, but that’s before I read that the 30 mg of Vyvanse is equal to only 10 mg of Adderall XR. Is it worth uping the dose to see if it helps? Is this product a long acting or timed release medicine? The appetite is still as supressed as with any of the meds he has taken, but we have not had one night where he has been awake all night which we had a lot on the other meds.

  7. Chris Cox Says:

I am 19 years old and finally got help for my AHDH. I started with vyvanse sense my doctor has said she has had a lot of success with it. So I started on 30 and it worked wonders. I was amazed how well it worked. But within a week I lost all therapeutic effects. So I moved up to the 50mg. This did the same thing, worked brilliantly for about 3 or 4 weeks, then tapered off. Moved onto the 70mg and helped a lot until the effects started to go away. So I started on other drugs like Adderol and it wasn’t nearly has helpful, then concerta - just the same, not as good. I know it’s off label to use vyvanse in adults, but it is the only drug that has been effective with me. I actually have confidence now in my abilities and how intelligent I really am, but starting to lose hope. None of the other drugs are nearly as effective and I am starting to see me turning back into my old self. Is using vyvanse at an off label dose a really bad idea? Are the risks of trying off label dosages to high? I’m growing frustrated with nothing else being able to work, and I want to go back on the vyvanse. Should I find someone who is willing to try off label dosages? Or is this too risky?

  8. Jessica Says:

For those complaining about duration, you might want to consider going up on your dose. I switched to Vyvanse after trying Adderall, Concerta and Daytrana and Vyvanse has been absolutely a life saver for me. But at first, when I was trying to find which dose worked best, it would work for a couple days, and I wouldn’t feel it for a full 12 hours. I am now on 100mg of Vyvanse and I have been now for about 2 months, and it works for a full 12 hours every single day. I think that until your on your “best” dose, you don’t get the full benefits that Vyvanse has to offer.
Doctors write off label all the time, usually they know from years of experience what is off label but still considered to be very safe and reasonable doses. I would tell your doctor (and maybe get a second opinion just to have more peace of mind) what you should do and tell them pretty much what your saying here and see what they have to say. Typically since its worked so well for you so far, they will safely start pushing the dose up at small intervals to see how you respond. But don’t get nervous that Vyvanse will only work for you for 2 weeks at a time. Again, thats how it happened with me until I found my best dose.
    Hope that helps!

  9. Marie Merganser Says:

I went into my doctor this morning to refill my Aderall. He told me that he needed to switch me to this new drug Vyvanse because he does not want me taking Aderall anymore. He told me that the police have been bothering him because a lot of his patients have been selling their Aderall on the street. The only thing that has ever worked for me is Aderall, all time release ADD medications make me feel cloudy. What can I do to get put back on my old prescription? It doesn’t seem fair that I should be penalized because my doctor overprescribes.

  10. purple8 Says:

I was diagnosed with ADD yesterday (I went to the doctor for a sore leg…who knew?) and was given a prescription for Vyvanse.

I’ve always prided myself on not being someone who needed medications (seeing this in print, I realize what ridiculous point of pride that is. . .) I took the Vyvanse this morning and it has made such a difference already. I started reading ADD info online tonight and I felt a wave of grief that for so many years I’ve been thinking that I am secretly a shameful, pathetic, useless lump of a woman because I just couldn’t get my act together. I feel exhausted from a lifetime of trying to hide or work around these problems. It never occurred to me that this was something a doctor could fix. I thought ADHD was a made-up disorder, completely invented in order to medicate bratty little boys who probably just needed a spanking. I’m cool with admitting I was wrong on this one.

Well, I couldn’t believe that taking one pill would make me feel so different. I felt like the constant chatter in my head was more structured. I could listen to voice mail without feeling this weird irritation I usually get from it. My mouth was a little dry, but I should probably drink more water anyway! The pill did curb my appetite, but this wasn’t a big deal since once I did eat, it didn’t make me feel queasy or anything.

I’ve read in some posts that the efficacy of the stuff wears off after a few days/weeks–I hope this doesn’t happen to me. I know it sounds so trite, but I do feel like I have been given a new shot at life.

  11. Brienne Says:

Hello,I am 28 years old and my doctor put me on Vyvanse 20mg about two weeks ago. I am someone who panics over something like the flu. I get myself so worked up that I put myself into a panic attack. The doc seems to think that I have a form of ADHD which caused part of my brain to not function at full capacity. He seems to also think that this drug will help me to cope with this issue. I have all these side affects but I am not sure how this drug is supposed to fix something that feels like an ocd issue. Does anyone have similar issues? I also am having problems with eating I sometimes dont want food from this drug and sometimes I am so hungry but after two bites I am really full. I am a person who loves to eat breakfast lunch and dinner but since I started this drug I just dont want anything. Can anyone offer any insight.

  12. Meg Says:

Hello, I am 38 yrs old. I am not a user, but a family member of a user. I have no idea what all of you go through every day. I am trying to find out if Vyvanse has been approved for adult use. My insurance will not cover it because it is only approved for children at this time. I am hoping that this will help because I do not like Aderrall at all. That was a medicine that caused a lot of heartache and grief in my family, but I won’t go there. Anyway, I would like for it to be available, but I can’t afford the full price either.

  13. Mike Says:

I’m a 45 yr old male and I discovered the benefits of taking ADHD years ago when I was dieting with Phen-Fen. Of course the Fen part is gone but I had been using phentermine to help me concentrate at work and get over that inertia in the morning. I used to get phentermine online but the laws have changed so that is no longer possible. I recently went to a psychiatrist for a phentermine prescription and was surprised how much of the drug I have to now take to achieve the same effect. I’ve read online that this is because the FDA (maybe DEA also) came down hard on the manufacturer for making the drug so powerful. So the Dr. recommended I try Vyvanse for a 30 day free trial. I loved it. I could not have dreamed for a better solution for my problem. I’m more energetic all day and I don’t battle the same problems concentrating or motivating myself getting started with tasks at work and home. The problems is I got another prescription and I just went to get it filled. The cost is $156 for 30 pills at CVS. I just got home and started my search and this is the first sight I found.

i am 36 years old and last summer i decided to return to college, i was seeing a therpist and she recommeded me seeing a Dr. to see about taking something to help me with school.I can answer yes to almost any question on a ADD test. When I was in high school I had very low grades and the school never wanted to full with me so did not do well. I was put on Vyvanse and it really helped and Im very happy to say I had straight A’s on my report card at the end of the semester, this was a great achivments for me since I work 50 hrs a week, have two teenagers and was taken 5 classes. I hope i will be able to contuine on and get a degree in social work.

  15. Tina Says:

I am a 38 year old female and was diagnosed with ADHD a few years ago. About 8 months ago, I started taking Vyvanse at 50mg. I have my ups and downs, but I like how the medication is working thus far. However, I do have one concern. I can’t seemed to get rid of a constant yeast infection. I have had numerous exams followed by every medication out there in every form. The thought of Vyvanse having some ill effect on my system has crossed my mind. Has anyone found this to be a side effect in adults? Any info would be appriciated.

  16. Emma Says:

I’m a 28 year old woman who has ADD and I have been taking Adderall XR for years. I reached the max perscribed amount of 50 mg so my doctor decided to start me on Vyvanse. 30mg Adderall XR + 30 mg Vyvanse the first week. Then 20mg Adderall XR + 30mg Vyvanse. Well, today I was suppose to drop down to the next level and I couldn’t do it. I had to stop taking the vyvanse and take my normal Adderall XR dosage.I’m not sure if this medication is reacting odd with my anti-depressent or if it’s just the Vyvanse alone.I have had crying spouts increasing over the last two weeks along with an overall feeling of just being “down”.Over the last two weeks I have lost focus at home and work. I also noticed some effects to my eyesight. I take my meds at 7:00 am and around 9:00 I start to notice some light sensitivity/ slight blurry vision. Obviously I will be calling my doctor today.
IS THERE A SUBSTITUTE MEDICATION FOR ADDERALL XR USER’S WHO HAVE REACHED THE MAXIMUM AMOUNT?
I seem to become imune to my perscribed dosage fairly quick,is this normal? I started on 10mg of Adderall Xr in 2005 and by 2008 50mg was not enough.
    Any info would be helpful.
    thanks.

Please update us on the status for FDA approval of Vyvanse for adults. I cannot convince my insurance, HR dept., or doctor to stop pointing fingers at each other when I want to purchase it at anything less than full price. Thank you!

    Hi there,

Im an adult with ADD diagnosed over 5 years ago after failing school and finding it hard to keep a job. I am now completing a PhD in History and loving it. However, I moved to the UK from the US and cannot get my prescriptions filled here as they dont believe this problem affects adults - I cannot get back to the US regularly enough to get my prescription … any advice? I have letters with diagnosis, old copies of prescriptions etc. I am not able to get my medication here.

    Thanks

I am a 31 yr old male, and went to the doctor for the first time for my ADHD two days ago. When I was a kid, I had to be on so much asthma medication, it did an “ok” job at controlling my ADHD symptoms…… until I got into Jr. High….. then it was all D’s and F’s.. After several failed businesses, (from my own ADHD doing) I finally decided to go see a doctor. He gave me 70mg to start out, FIRST of all, I’m going to ask him for a lower dose RIGHT AWAY. YES it is nice being able to focus and get things done, but I think I’m a little to “up” if you know what I mean. BUT, here’s why I’m posting. Things AREN’T so “up” in bed. As a matter of fact they aren’t “UP” at ALL! Has anyone else had this problem? I know a lot of postings on this site have been made by females, but if you could even ask any of your friends, or any other ADHD forums, I would appreciate it GREATLY. I hope that a lower dose will fix “things”, but if not I might have to get a prescription for Vyvanse and Viagra :)

    Thanks for the help,

    Mike

    Hi,

I was recently diagnosed adhd. I am 37 I was great to know what was up with me. My doc gave me Vyvanse 30mg. When I finally took it, it was amazing! I was awake, alert, I could think crystal clear, didn’t feel overly stimulated or irratated. It actually seemed to last for 12 hours. That was the first 2 days. The third day around 3:00 pm I started getting sleepy and foggy. The fourth day I only felt good for 4/5 hours and got really sleeply again. The fifth day , it didn’t work at all and I was so tired I thought I could sleep for a week. Didn’t take it on the sixth day and I at lest felt like my old add self rather than like I was in a coma. My doc told me to only take half the dose maybe it was too much. So today I took half didn’t help at all and I am so tired. Anybody have any that might be helpful or encouraging for me know?
    Thanks

Hi, This has been an issue for me for years. As everyone else here has done I have tried all the medicine. I am 19 year old male, and I have been through concertra, adderall, stratara, focalin, and now on vyvanse. It works well, I think but I am never satisfied with the length, and always have the worst side affects, after 4 hours I am usually down, kinda depressed, don’t really want to interact, and this feeling goes on for the whole day. I don’t think anyone can give me a solution to that becasue well thats has always happened, but I really want to know if I take 50 mg, or 75mg and it wears out after about 4 hours but I need another 6 hours or so to study what should I do? Also I need to get sleep after that studying period, and the only way to fall asleep if by taking NyQuil or Tylenol PM which gives me a headache after, what else can I do? Please give me recommendations. And if I take the vyvanse out of the capsule and take it as a powder would it be instant affect. and then maybe taking a 50 mg capsule 3 hours later would be a good idea?????? Please respond.
    David

  26. Shannon Says:

I’ve been on Vyvanse 30, now on 50 and I am have several side effect. While my ability to focus has increased substantially, I don’t experience effectiveness for the 12 hours, only about 6-8. This of course is not nearly enough, I get up around 7:30 and sometimes work till 10pm. Secondly, I am more aggitated (than usual), which affects several aspects of my life including my relationship with my 11 year old and my fiance. I have an appointment with psychiatrist tomorrow, June 11th and will ask about plain Adderall since it is available in generic and my copay on Vyvanse is about $30 for a 30 day supply(1cpoqd) and it seems to get more expensive as the dose change (expected). Does anyone have ay experience on Adderall (not XR)?
